BEHIND THE SCENES OF KANYE WEST'S “POWER” VIDEO

The 88 created a behind the scenes look at Kanye Wests “POWER” by Marco Brambilla.  This is an exclusive video showing never seen footage of the anticipated video before its official release.
“POWER” shows a continuous camera move from extreme close-up of Mr. West revealing an a neoclassical video tableau showing characters and creatures surrounding him in an abstract environment - all moving in extreme slow motion.  Inspired by Michelangelo’s frescos in the Sistine Chapel, the piece depicts a faux historical moment - an empire on the brink of collapse from its own excess, decadence and corruption. Civilization, a video mural created for the new Standard hotel in New York City, depicts a journey from hell to heaven interpreted through modern film language using computer-enhanced found footage. This epic video mural contains over 300 individual channels of looped video blended into a multi-layered seamless tableau of interconnecting images that illustrate a contemporary, satirical take on the concepts of Heaven and Hell. This video is going to be crazy !!

TEACHING “RELIGION & HIP HOP CULTURE IN AMERICA”

Bernard Freeman better known as BUN B will be a distinguished guest lecturer at Rice University in the Spring of 2011 for a class called Religion and Hip Hop Culture In America. His latest album “Trill OG” is in stores now.

How did you first become involved in this?
I was guest lecturer for the hip hop and religion class in fall '09 and I got to talking with Dr. Anthony Penn, the teacher of the class and head of religious studies at Rice. We found out that we shared a lot of the same ideas and it occurred to us — well him primarily — that me being an addition to this course in a teaching aspect could be an opportunity to create something very new and very real in higher education.

What's the course going to include?
We'll be reflecting on the nature and content of hip hop as a religious experience. As well as religious expression. We'll discuss the history of rap music and find the different parallels and correlations between religion and hip hop. People will be surprised at how many instances there are. Just the Five-Percent Nations presence in hip hop alone during the late '80s and early '90s — we could teach for days just on that. And other different things — we have Jewish rappers now.

Are you nervous at all?
Absolutely, I would be a fool if I wasn't. I have to be very careful with what I do because this could either open a lot of doors and opportunities for other people or it could shut them down solid. Point blank, period. I know that everybody doesn't want to see this happen, so we just have to be careful not to give anyone any ammunition to shoot this down. But I feel good about it.

Young Jeezy & Shyne Covers XXL

Young Jeezy's new joint Jizzle featuring Lil Jon off his newest project titled, “Thug Motivation 103” that will now drop on September 28th(his birthday).

SHYNE ON DIDDY
“I don’t know whether he was nervous, afraid,” Shyne says of Puffy. “When you’re afraid and you’re emotional, that’s a different survival tactic. Those are the people that do anything, regardless of character and integrity, to preserve and protect themselves, regardless of who they hurt. I guess maybe that was the situation. Never been in a situation like that, where he facing years, and he got hundreds of millions and all that shit at stake. But where I’m from, doesn’t matter. You lose everything for your comrade. Again, if you’re in battle, I’ll catch a bullet, too. It ain’t like, Yo, he’s dead. Don’t make no sense for me to die, too. Nah, I’ma die, too! So you hope or you take for granted that all men are the same. But I know all men are not.

You can always say, ‘Man, that ain’t the way to handle the situation,’ ” he told XXL. “Sure, I know in my soul that the situation was supposed to be handled in a different way. But it ain’t really a matter of disappointment or letdown, ’cause I never really … I grew up never having sh–, never having anybody. So I never was that dude to depend on a mother—-er. Obviously, the actions is not something that you condone or that you’re happy with. Not at all.”

Big Boi Splits With Jive & Talks About ‘Purple Ribbon’ Label

In the story Big Boi details the reason behind the split with Jive Records & talks about his guest appearances on his upcoming album/Purple Ribbon Label. For More On The Full Interview Visit: http://www.ozonemag.com/

So you are officially signed to Def Jam Records now? The last time this news leaked out, you came back and refuted it.
I’m signed to Def Jam as of a week ago. Jive let me go. I asked to be released due to creative differences. I’m back with the man [Antonio “L.A.” Reid] who understands my music and the creative process. Much respect to Barry Weiss at Jive though. Much thanks to him for respecting my craft and letting me do what I gotta do.

You said the final straw was when Jive asked you to record your own version of Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop.” Why would they think that would be a good idea?
They don’t know us like that. Up until Speakerboxx/The Love Below, Outkast was not a radio-driven group. We are Soul Funk crusaders. The type of music we make, we weren’t seeing eye-to-eye with the label on it. For a man to tell me to go make my own version of “Lollipop?” That doesn’t even sound right. That’s what the president of Jive told me. When he told me that, that’s when I had to start putting my own songs out. I was leaking songs just trying to figure out how to make the right moves. I want to put this album out under the right circumstances. Things weren’t jelling over there.

There was a time that whenever an Outkast song left the studio, whether by design or by mistake, radio was all over it almost instantly. Why aren’t we hearing any of the joints you leaked on the air?
It’s programming. The people are not picking the music, it’s the suits now picking the music for the people to listen to. There’s not a lot of respect for it. It’s all about the dollar, so they want what sells the fastest. With music being such a fast burn nowadays, there’s a new song today and a new song tomorrow and another one on Wednesday. My thing is, my focus is to make timeless classics and not conform into what’s going on now. Ice Cube said it best: “Don’t follow trends, set them.” Don’t let them dictate to you. I’ve been doing that, and it’s working.
With all the success he’s achieved, you’d think Big Boi would be the last person to have any record label drama. He’s proven that he can make great music and sell a couple records. No Outkast album has gone less than platinum. When you combine all of their albums totals, it reaches 25 million. That’s more than Luther Vandross, Sade, Earth, Wind and Fire, Green Day and Nirvana, to name a few. They are the only rap group to win six Grammys. Aside from Run-DMC, they are widely considered the greatest rap group of all time.
So it goes without saying that whatever Big Boi has been doing for the past 17 years must be working. Unfortunately, the industry doesn’t work the same way. The consensus right now is that “music sucks” and if you’re not on the radio or 106th & Park, you’re not going to do well. Anybody that really still listens to rap music will tell you that there’s actually quite a bit of great music out there, it’s just not being broadcast. But the reality is that yes, for an artist of Big Boi’s stature, radio and TV has to be an option that is exploited. Big knows this and has made the best adjustments he can without “selling out” in the process.

What’s the status of your label Purple Ribbon?
I’ve still got Purple Ribbon. I have [artists like] Vonnegutt, Janelle Monae, Blackowned C-Bone and Cutty Cartel (formerly of Jim Crow, the group that also featured producer Polow Da Don). I just supply like the dope house. I have three rooms in the studio and a squad of producers. That’s how I’ve been able to work and also get complete albums [done] on them.

"Dear Mama"

"Tupac Shakur Has Been Added The Library Of Congress National Recording Registry — An outspoken critic of profanity and violence in hip-hop culture — with work from a rapper who was shot and killed in 1996 is notable, but organizers said Tupac’s “Dear Mama” was a heartfelt homage to mothers struggling with addiction and poverty.

It’s also a “relatively tame” recording, and the cultural impact of hip-hop is undeniable, program coordinator Steve Leggett said. Tupac is the third rapper inducted, following Grandmaster Flash and Public Enemy."
